NI – Pay your motor tax or the car will be crushed

New figures have revealed that the rate of motor tax evasion in Northern Ireland is more than three times higher than in the rest of the UK.

The authorities are planning a New Year clampdown in an effort to combat the problem.

Last year, the rate of car tax evasion in Northern Ireland rose to 3%, three and a half times higher than in other parts of the UK.

As well as meaning a significant loss of revenue, many of the untaxed vehicles were not safe enough to be on the road and used by uninsured and unlicensed drivers or criminals.

The PSNI is now launching a new scheme to tackle the car tax dodgers.

Under operation Evader vehicles untaxed for over 28 days will be clamped and owners will have to pay £260 to get them released, or pay a £100 fine if they can produce a valid road tax disc.

Clamped vehicles which are not claimed within a week can then be crushed.
