Very often we get asked “How to fit an after market radio into a Toyota Yaris?”
Today we are going to show you how simple it is. The Toyota Yaris has a factory build-in radio which is part of the dashboard itself and no fascia adaptor has been made available to replace the original radio.
But, below the radio there is a pocket, and if removed will allow us to fit an aftermarket head unit, and that’s exactly what we are going to show you below.
Tools needed for the job:
1. Insulating Tape
2. Phillips screw-driver
3. 1 x Toyota ISO Adaptor Loom picture below

1. First we are going to remove the knobs from the heating system which will uncover 2 screws that we also need to remove:

2. Remove the ashtray below the original radio and behind it you will see 2 other screws that needs to be removed as well:

3. Pull the top panel (heating panel) towards you and move it a bit upwards to unvail the other 2 screw behind it that hold the original radio in place, which we are going to remove as well:

4. With all the screws removed the radio should easily be pulled out of it place:

5. At the back of the radio you will notice 3 white plugs, but we only need to remove 2 of them, which will be plugged into the Toyota ISO Adaptor pictured at the start:
6. Connect the ISO Adaptor into the 2 original plugs removed from the radio:

7. Now we are going to remove the pocket located below the original radio to make space for the new after-market CD / MP3 Player head unit :

8. Once the pocket is removed, we are ready to get the new radio in the empty space but first we need to remove the cage and the surrounding plastic panel from the new head unit as shown below:

so the new radio will look like this:

9. With these two things removed, now we can force the new radio in the empty space left when the pocket has been removed and we are going to use 2 small screws to fix it into the cage that holds the original radio, but make sure those 2 screws are long enough to hold the radio but not too long to touch the inside mechanism. They should be only 5-7mm long.

and this is how it should look from the front…

10. Plug the new radio loom into the Toyota ISO adaptor as shown below:

then connect it at the back of the new radio. Don’t forget to plug in the aerial connector as well.
11. Now you are ready to put everything back in its place starting with the radio..

and screw back the 4 bolts that are holding this panel in place. Two above the radio and two below it located behind the removed ashtray.
12. Push back the top panel (heating) and fit the 2 screws removed before and put back the 3 knobs as well.
This is how everything should look when finished:

As you can see, it wasn’t that hard and in less than 1/2 hour you are ready to listen to your favourite Cd’s or Mp3′s.
Enjoy your music.

Thanks for this step by step run down. I just fitted a mp3 player in my girlfriends Yaris it took 13 minutes and is working well. I would have struggled without your help THANKS!
exellent way on how its done some say take all top part off but you dont need to with this
Just returned from Halfords who said that it would be a major job to put an additional CD in my Toyota Yaris 2000.
I was obviously disappointed as the tape desk is so dated, however I search the web and found your article. My husband is going to try fitting the CD in himself as the article looks clear and straight forward.
Will let you know how he gets on – Dawn
It’s actually not that hard and the job shouldn’t take more than 30min.
Please let me know how he get on.
I am glad the article was able to give you some inside tips.
Done and dusted (yipee) – took about 25mins for hubby to install – then another 20 mins to return to the store to replace the CD player, as it was faulty! (would not read any CD’s)
Replaced by store and hubby had the install down to 10 mins – actually installed the new, more expensive replacement in the store car park. (too be on save side
All working fine now – one happy lady.
Well done for such an easy to follow article Dawn
Thanks and I am really happy it was help to you.
You just saved yourself 40-50 euro.
what exactly is the third connector in the radio (the big with the only two wires) ?
There is also an other small with two wires, not connected anywhere, assebled with a lot of wires. What is its purpose?
thank you in advance
The third connector with the 2 wires, is for the original display on the dashboard.
Where can i get one of those iso adaptors???
because i think that link mite be faulty
cheers for the guide btw its spot on
Sorry – Link fixed now so it should bring you directly to the product itself.
Hiya, this is a great guide on how to do it.
I have one problem. I get up until the part when you try pull the radio out, mine wont come out I’ve unscrewed all the screws, Is there anyway of doing it?
Thanks
Just make sure you removed all screws (top and bottom-ashtray) and pull towards you.
Yea thats what I done, Im going to try again tomorrow. Its really annoying just having the tape player.
Very helpful, would have taken much longer to fit without following the step by step fitting.
if you want pc2-17-4 look on ebay if you have lost your say sony old lead left it in the car when you sold it look on ebay again for 16 pin lead dont forget the black ends are the ones that go to your radio so check wether the ofset on the terminals are correct for your cd unit ie 1 is off set on the black coupling and 1 is in the center.
pity we cant use the old tape deck still
Amazing !!!
i couldnt do it without this guide.
Thanks Again
No problem. You are more than Welcome.
Hi,
I’ve just found that my radio doesn’t work any more. It switches on and I can change the radio channels but nothing comes out the speakers. I’ve checked all the connections and there doesn’t seem to be any blown fuses. Bought some top end speakers and no change. Could the amp in the factory radio have blown? And if i do buy a new HU will that solve the problem?
Thanks for any help because its driving me nuts!!
It sounds like the original sound amplifier is gone, so fitting an after-market HU should solve your problem.
Jeeze that was a quick response! I thought it was something like that.
Thankyou very much for the help!
Hey Guys,
Just bought a W reg Yaris with 45K on the clock, seems nice and reliable but i wish i’d gone for a bigger engine, what sort of revs is it happy at? I keep looking at my little mpg computer (I’ve never had one before) and I’ve found I’m driving like an old lady to keep the mpg nice and high – it’s killing me!!
Anyways – onto the purpose of my post – am I right to say that following the above instructions will give me the new headunit, and the tape, and the radio as it all was before? Do you switch to the new head unit using the tape/cd button?
If so – how cool…!
Cheers in advance!
Lee
Unfortunately the original head unit will not work as it get disconected using the power / speakers blocks on the new HU fitted below.
hi i have done all of above only now to discover nothing works at all. tried pluging it all back together just to use cassette again but still no power!!! help!!!!!!
Check the fuses. There is a chance you are after blowing one of them while working on the system.
Get a test lamp and check the red or/and yellow wire from the after-market HU and make sure they both have power while the ignition is on and the original Toyota loom is plugged into the ISO connectors.
Have a look at image #10
Hi Louie, this is a great little guide. This will be really usefull for me in the future but I want to check something first, you seem to be the pro so I thought I would ask. Basically I already have a CD player in the yaris, but I just want to put in an aditional head unit because of better sound etc. The car isnt mine, is belongs to my parents, what I want to do is fit a head unit but also have the current cd player and radio working, so that when they use it nothing really changes for them and they dont have to worry about using some crazy system. So reall I need to know if there is a way I can have both the systems linked into the car, I can keep the radio on the internal yaris system as I wont really need that in the head unit, its just sound I think. Any help would be awsome, thanks!
There is a way but it requires a lot of “know how” as you can not have 2 systems runing at the same time through the same speakers.
Is there anywhere where I could find out some more info on whats required or the rough price for a garage to do something like this?
Thanks.
I don’t think any fiiter will do it for you. I did it few times myself in the past but it is very costy and time consuming.
You need to build a switch, discharge the speakers and build some boards with transistors and diodes on them to reverse the signal one way depending on the head unit in use.
Mhhh okay sounds like I will have to give it a miss, thanks a lot for your help!
Hello, I am going to do this to my Yaris Verso (2004) I’ve been told that the binnacle (instrument Panel) has to come off first, before I can take the centre panel off, apparently there are 2 screws underneath holding the centre panel on, grateful if you have any ideas, regards John
The Verso version are different so I can not say.
Great job, thanks a lot. Just one question, is there a way to keep the old tape player working? Or is it possible to fit in just a CD changer with switching to it just by tape/CD button?
If the head unit has cd changer control, yes you add it using a Connects2 interface + sony cd changer, otherwise the original unit will be disconected.
Great guide mate!!
Does this work for all makes of cd player?? Im wanting to fit a sonycd player to my sisters yaris but was told it wouldnt fit???
I managed to pick up a replacement fasica for the whole cassette section so I can fit a cd player and still ahev the coin holder, would this work better?
Great guide, I couldn’t have done it with out your help thanks a million. I’ve one question tho, Every time I power down my car and take out the key my new cd player loses power and all the saved radio stations and settings. Should it stay powered? If it should any ideas? Thanks a again
@Jason – I don’t see why it shouldn’t fit unless the Sony Head Unit is not the standard DIN size.
@Damian – Get a test lamp and check to make sure the Yelloy wire has permanent power supply and the Red wire only when the ignition is on.
Hello Louie, reference my previous question about fitting a radio/cd unit to a Yaris Verso 2005, your instructions worked great, the only difference with mine is it’s a phase 2 dashboard, so you have to slide the Speedo cover off first and there are 2 screws underneath at the front, which stop you taking off the heater control part of the dash, apart from that plain sailing, thanks John
Thanks John. Haven’t worked on Verso before so I can not say, but your instructions might give others some help.
Hi i have one question can you remove the standard tape and fit double din stereos in a yaris or is it only the single din ones?
This guide look excellent cant wait to try it out just waitin for my stereo to arrive and fit!
Sorry James but is not possible to fi a double DIN head unit.
Hello there, excuse my ignorance in these matters but Ive just bought a tevion cd/mp3 radio unit from Aldi and want to fit it to the Yaris. On the leads of the new radio it has a sticker saying about fitting the red wire to the ignition switch. My question is this, what is this switch and is it already sorted if I buy the above iso adaptor loom. The way my little brain reads it is all I have to do is connect what ever cable comes with the new radio to the connecting part of the old.
Sorry but complete new comer to all this wiring stuff.
Malak
The original fitment has all the wires you need so the adaptor should work for you out of the box.
Thank you for the speedy reply and the answer I wanted. So do I have to disconnect the battery at all then?
Malak
Are all radios a universal size should all should fit this space?
No you don’t need to disconect the battery.
Normal DIN size should all be the same.
I have recently purchased a yaris verso 2000 form Ireland and it only has a tape drive
Your excellent article is all I can find on the web regarding an upgrade. Do you sell radios. I want a radio with cd and cd changer is such a thing exists
Thanks
Yes we do. Check out the car audio section:
http://www.funkymotors.ie/Maincat/Car-Audio-km111555/
The packages are not as popular as they used to be due to the new MP3 players launch few years back.
Hi thanks for the guide on how to fit a cd player it worked perfectly but just one more question do you have any guide on how to fit extra speaker or a bassbox at the back of the yaris? thanks
Hi James,
You can ad a set of speakers on the back shelf and run the purple+purple/white and green+green/white whires from the new head unit all the way to the rear to power them up.
Same for the bass-box, but this time use the RCA output (red & white).
A bass-box also has to be powered directly from the battery (red whire or yellow – depending on the unit you have) and remote wire (usually blue) can be found at the back of the head unit.
HI again where does the purple+purple/white and green+green/white wires run from and are they already there to use or do you have to run them yourself as i looked in the boot and i see no extra connections for extra speakers.
You’ll find them at the back of the new head unit and you need to extend them all the way to the back of the car.
ok will i need to bring them through the doors and panels e.t.c.
Not through the doors, but under the carpet if you fit the speakers on the back-shelf.
Hello there, just thought I would say thanx for the help. Finally got the cable today and fitted the radio. Your instructions were most informative and very easy to follow. Your a man of sound knowledge.
Glad I could help.
Nice one. Just fitted one of those 39.99 Aldi units as well without a hitch. MP3′s back in the car again. Cheers
Hi
do you know if there a way to still use the remote which is on the wheel with a new CD Player ?
Thanks
Hey i gotta question. Well i have a toyota yaris, and the exact same dashboard as seen above. My problem is my battery in my car kept draining over night, and it turned out to be the radio which was draining it because the wiring or something was faulty. Would doing this help me have my radio and music back? Thanks.
@metallos: Depends on the brand of the new head unit. There are a lot of steering wheel adaptors made for most popular brands as Sony, Pioneer, Alpine, etc…
@Adam: Adam, does the radio goes off when you turn the ignition off? If the radio is still powered up then something is wrong alright.
Check the ignition and permanent feed at the back of the head unit. On some radios, the yellow and red wire has to be switched around, but never heard this happening on a Toyota. Is more for VWs, Audis…
Thanks FunkyMotors.ie for your answer
I’m open on all brands cause I haven’t choose yet my new player. It mainly depends if I find an adaptor or not
Could you give me the adaptor for several brands and a place to find them ?
Thanks
Well if i left the radio on and turn the ingition off the speakers would crack. And i took the car to a mechanics and they disconnected the radio, saying that that was the cause of the battery drain. I just wondered whether it is more likely to be the wiring, in which case there would be no point doing this, or more likely to be the actual radio. The mechanics said that the only way to get a radio again would be to find an old toyato one in a scrap yard or on ebay, which makes me think it’s the radio that is the problem.
@metallos: I haven’t seen yet a Yaris with the remote control capabilities available on the steering wheel (in ireland) but you can try http://www.connects2.com
@Adam: Do you have an amplifier fitted in the car? The speakers shouldn’t make any noises at all, unless the system is not wired properly.
BTW, a mechanic is not an auto-electrician, and some do give you the wrong advice.
Hi FunkyMotors
Can you reccomend/sell a good radio/cd and is it easy to fit a cd changer
I was interested to read about the remote steering wheel fittings, is this easy?
Brilliant instructions – looks like I wont need my pickaxe and hammer.
Hi Noel,
Due to MP3 players available at very good prices, a cd changer is not a good buy anylonger.
A standard CD with MP3 files will hold probably more than a cd changer itself.
You can pick a good one here: http://www.funkymotors.ie/Categories/Car-Audio-km111555/MP3-Players-kc222556/page-1/
I can not comment on the steering wheel remote control for the Yaris, as I haven’t seen any here in Ireland.
I contacted Connects2 in UK and they actually don’t have one available… Sorry.
hi so what is the insulating tape needed for
Just in case you need to make some other connection as the amplifier remote wire, a car kit mute wire, etc…
Hello!
Great thanks for your help! So this way it was easy to install my new car-audio into my Yaris, and it
operates well. Viktor from Hungary
Cheers mate, great guide.
My girlfriends yaris whole unit was broken and it was gonna cost 700 quid for a new one. Found this guide and managed to do it for free in about 20minutes. Thanks alot!!
Hi, right well I am completely new to this wiring stuff, and have never done anything like this before. I totally understand you’re intructions except 2 things….these are:
1: On picture #5 what does the far right plug do?
2: On picture #10 where you say ‘Don’t forget to plug in the aerial connector as well.’ where would i plug this into? my new CD Player? And would there be only one place it could go (so i dont mess it up and put it in some random place
)
The 3rd plug you see on picture #5 is for the original display and you can forget about it.
The aerial gets fitted at the back of the new radio and YES there is only one place that can go into.
If you follow the instructions step – by – step you can not go wrong.
how come i cant see the cable for the aerial in any of the pictures? will that be in the current tape player i have fitted when i take tht out??……..sorry i am asking these questions i just wana make sure i get it right…..lol
You can actually see the place it was pluged in in picture #9 left corner (the bottom unit)
Last question i promise
do we completely take the tape cassette player out?? or do we leave it in n put the cd player in the space underneath it where the pocket is…sorry if you cant understand it lol
You can not take the tape player out due to the custome shape, but the new radio will replace the pocket space.
Hi thanks for the Guide. I have all the things ready for fitting. But one thing worrying me is my new sony cd player supplied with plug which will plug to back of new cd player and other end is only a set of wires without any loom(Plug). How to join these wires to Toyota ISO adopter loom?..Thanks Hari
All workinh down to perfection!! Thanks a lot!
@Hari – you probably need to solder the wires togheter or convert them to an ISO adaptor.
@Matt – happy it works for you.
Everything working fine after joinng the wires with spade connectors…Thanks a lot for ur guide.
I am looking to put in a CD player with Ipod connection facility into my daughter’s car in exactly the same way as you have shown. She has a 2004 Yaris . Can you recommend a suitable make and type of player which can play CDs but she can also plug her Ipod into. I am not going to undertake this job on my own as its a surprise for her and the surprise would be I get it wrong. Should I be able to take it to most garages to do it, or should I go to a specialist? I am based in Kent so any recommendations would be welcome.
Thanks, Debbie
have a look at the ipod + head unit packages:
http://www.funkymotors.ie/Categories/Car-Audio-km111555/iPod-Head-Unit-Package-kc222728/page-1/
Hi,
I have a different problem. My Yaris Verso came with a cd player but it died and needs to be replaced. Who makes a suitable replacement for Toyota TF 0411? Do I need an adaptor?
Thanks
Toyota only…
hi,
I am fitting a Sony CDX-GT410U unit and have followed your brilliant guide, but have no power to the unit or the clock on the dash.
Is it likely to be a fuse problem?
If so what is a test lamp and how do i go about changing the fuses?
thanks for all your help.
Yes it sounds like a fuse is gone.
You can get test lamp from any motor factors and check all fuses.
thanks for the super quick reply on a friday afternoon!
could tell it was a fuse cause my interior light wasn’t working either!
consulted the handbook and had the fuse replaced in 10 minutes!
thank you for such useful information and filling my ears with beautiful noises!
Hi,
Great article, I’m looking forward to giving it a try. But first I have a problem with the existing radio in my yaris. The radio unit turns on ok and the cassette player works but the actual radio doesn’t pick up any stations. Its just the same static all the way up the frequencies on all the bands. I thought it might be the aerial disconnected at the back of the radio but I checked it and its still ok. Would it be a case that the unit is just faulty and fitting a new HU would sort it? Or could there be another problem elsewhere?
Thanks,
Kevin
Is hard to say without being there.
Remove the head unit and plug-off the aerial, then using a normal wire or your hand, touch the place where the aerial goes in and see if the frequency noise is changing.
If it does, than more likely the aerial is at fault (or the aerial cable).
WOW Thanks for the uber quick reply! I’ll try that later on.
So if it turns out to be a faulty aerial or aerial cable, I guess there’d be no need to upgrade to a new HU. Besides it would be pointless as the same fault (presuming it is the aerial) would show up with the new radio. Hmmm…
Thanks!
Best is to try with a new head unit, but that’s up to you.
I took the original radio out today and tried it with a different aerial as you suggested but the frequency noise didn’t change at all so I guess its not the aerial. Could it perhaps be a grounding issue somewhere? I got the adaptor cable so I’ll get a hold of a different stereo and try it with that.
Ground issue? Not realy.
Try another radio and let me know.
Thanks, will do
Hi,
I read your instructions which I thought was the best out of the others I read on the Internet.
My Yaris has already got a Toyota CD Player along with the Toyota Cassette player.
I was wondering if I replace the Toyota CD Player with my Panasonic aftermarket stereo will I still have the ability to use my Cassette player since you did mention before that you will need to remove the harness cable from the stock head unit, but since mine has already got a CD Player and Cassette player, will I still be able to use the cassette player accordingly.
Another thing is that, since you used a Panasonic head unit to replace your cassette player. What does the Brown wire do on the harness cable of the Panasonic Stereo (NOT the wire on the ISO Cable) and on which wire would I connect the remote wire of an Amplifier on the Panasonic harness cable.
Thats all
Thank You
If you replace the head unit, the original tape will be lost as there is no power going to it anylonger.
As far as my memory recalls the brown wire if for “Mute” if you install a handsfree kit.
The remote wire is normally blue or blue/white, but you can always use the red (ignition wire) as well.
I understand what you say, as you said this before, but how is it that there is a CD Player and a Cassette player in the car of which I am able to use them both. The CD player is the Toyota CD Player.
Because as you mentioned, the CD player is made by Toyota and is designed as an add-on to fit the original OEM unit.
Hi, followed your excellent guide. I am installing a Sony CDX-GT410U, but I dont get any power to it at all.
When I bought the car it already had a Kenwood cd player in the bottom space, so all I have done is swap them over. If I put the Kenwood back in it works fine, but when I put the Sony in, I get nothing?
Do you have any suggestions? I have heard before that with some head units you have to swap the red and yellow wires? It this worth trying?
The swap is not for Toyota, but VW, Audi, Skoda, etc…
I will check the fuse at the back of the head unit (Sony).
Is the head unit new or second-hand? There is a chance the head unit is not working. Check the power with a test lamp.
Ahah, as it turned out it was a simple mistake. When I took my Sony head unit out of my old car, I must have pulled apart a yellow wire and had not connected it back together. As soon as I did that it worked first time. OInce again, thanks for this excellent guide, it really helped me and obviously saved me some money going to the dealer etc. It’s a shame that they dont make a new fasia so that we could remove the Toyota standard cd player while we are at it. Oh well, cant have everything I suppose.
Thanks
Thanks for the guide and thankfully Toyota made the dash like that because now Theifs will have trouble stealing it even though I may leave the fasica on it still.
one for Steve, if you search for Yaris Fascia on ebay, there’s a firm doing new fascias for Yaris, which do away with the old headunit approx £15.00, regards to all
Hi again,
After connecting the stereo I was wondering if I can make use of the in dash controls that used to control the previous stereo. If so how can I get to do so.
Thanks
Hi – great site.
I have a ’99 Yaris and the cassette player is not working. It won’t play, rewind or forward. The radio won’t tune into the stations properly either you can vaguely pick up radio1 or radio2 but you have to crank the volume up and its very very distorted. I’ve checked the car fuses and they are all fine. The aerial is also intact.
I used the ‘i-trip’ and tuned my ipod into a radio frequency – it worked but again I had to crank up the volume – I could hear my ipod but it was distorted however I don’t think the speakers are blown.
Is it possible that there would be an unlinked cable or blown fuse inside or at the back of the stereo that is responsible for both the cassette players power and the radios reception ?
Without checking the speakers to make sure they are 100% alright is hard to say. The only thing you have working is the radio, and making use of the i-trip didn’t help as it is using the radio frequency as well. I will say it could be the final transistor (the chip for the sound) that could be busted, but it’s a 50/50 chance.
Hi there, this guide helped me so much so thanks for that! However, my new cd player is now installed but i can’t get any music from it. Its powering on ok and i’m getting the ‘beep’ sound when i press a button on the player but no music from either the radio, aux or cd. Is this likely to be a fault with the player or with the way i’ve installed it?
Thanks again
Check the speakers plug is installed properly. The ‘beep’ noice comes from the head-unit itself.
If the speakers are alright and the connection is right as well, than I will say the HU could be faulty. Try another HU.
hey guys! is there any guide how to install in this yaris model speakers at the back of the car? are there by defult cables at the back of the car and i can use it for my speakers or i have to put my own cables until the radio?
Hi
I have radio and separarte toyota 6cd player in my car. Now my radio has bad reception . So now i want to install new player in the place of cd player. So how will make the connections.
Thanks
Peter
Hi, i have a standard radio/cassette player in my yaris 2001, but i wanted to replace that with the standard radio/cassette player, will it ask me for a code or anything? and also will it just plug straight into the leads that are on the tape player?
Thanks for this detailed info, just a quick question, I’ve bought a CD/MP3/Bluetooth enabled player for my Yaris, will this connector listed ‘ Toyota ISO Adaptor Loom ‘ work with the Bluetooth element or is there a different connector required?
Bluetooth connection does not require any wiring. Once the unit has power and it’s on, you can pair any bluetooth devices to connect to the unit itself.
Hi, I got a 02 golf and installed a new cd player in it, when i plugged it in it worked but then i pushed da cd player into the hole and i heard a clicking noise(2 wires rubbing off each other i think) and the radio turned off:O… i tryed changing fuses on the radio and on the actual cars fuse box and using a different cd player… but no luck? how will i go about fixing this? ohh and another question the aerial thing you plug into the cd player looks weird and wont fit in to the new cd player but will fit in the old one, what sort of device could i buy to change the head of the aeiral so it would fit the new cd player?.. thanks…
Make sure all fuses are alright. Look under the bonnet as well.
The aerial adaptor you are looking for can be found here:
Aerial Adaptor 90 VW
or this one VW Aerial Adaptor
OK thanks, i looked at the fuse box this morning and the fuse no 10 is blown which is electrics for the car? so ill change that.. also when i sit in the car with all the doors and boot closed there is a light coming up only when i put in the key telling me that their is a door open, which their isnt i checkd all the sensors aswel on the doors and there okay.. could this have sometyhing to do with the fuse that is blown?.. thanks..
Change the fuse and we will see but I doubt it.
I knew this,i fitted a cd to my wifes verso a few years ago,it took me many hours to suss this out,i wish this article had been around at the time as it is excellent,i can now fit one in 15 to 20 mins.now i need to take the heater motor out and am struggling, does anyone know a good link for this information.Andy
Hi,
I got a Cd player installed into my friend’s 2002 Yaris for her birthday but when we got it installed (in Halfords) they said they could connect it so it works etc but that she would have to manually turn it on and off as they couldn’t connect it so that it would automatically do this when the car is turned on and off. Even though she has been turning the CD player off every time when getting out of the car, the battery on the car is dying a lot. Granted the car may just need a new battery, I just thought i’d check if the CD player could be causing this?
Thanks in advance,
Caoimhe
The Yaris has an ingition wire available so it looks like the wiring is wrong there.
I have a similar problem with my 2001 corolla. It is fitted with a factory cassette player similar to the one above. I have aquired a TM4410 toyota cd player and want to conect it to the car so i still can use the tape player and use the cd player. Basically so i still control from the top control pod ( if thats what its called. The thing where u control the tape and radio from.) If i need to buy more equipment to make it work, that will be great because i want the tape player to work with the CD player. Not that I have ever used it since I bought the car but would be nice to have it.
Thanks in Advance.
Brilliant my cd player has gone and I was quoted by Yaris £550 to get it repaired. Then I went to a specialist who fits car stereos and they said “It can’t be done” only by the Yaris Dealers as it has to go on the diagnostic machine. Thanks I shall give this one a go
Thanks for this guide – really helpful and easy to follow. Just fitted a sony unit into my 2001 Yaris verso, and all the steps were exactly the same. took about half an hour, but would have been quicker if I hadn’t fitted it upside down first! Thanks again…
Ben
Hi There
Great site! I have an 02 Yaris VVTI colour collection, and it just has an integrated radio and front-loading CD player. I’d like to get my iphone plugged into this as simply as possible (tried using the iTrip but way to much static and instability) so any suggestions would be gratefully accepted
Cheers!
If the cd player has cd changer control you can use one of this to get your iPod integrated:

Hi I have fited a cd player in my yaris and works fine however when I use the gas the sound is queiter and when I turn it up more it gives a more of a fuzzier sound help!
I have just bout and 2002 Yaris with the factory rado cassette. I am thinkingof buying a cd player and have been advised to get a Kenwood model – can I use a different model to that and the speakers in my car – the 2 on the dash are working but I don’t get any sound from the door panels. My Yaris is a 3-door model so no speakers in the back but I would like to get a good CDplay with a ‘bass boost’ and wonder if that would be enough just using the factory fitted speakers on the dash and the side door panels. Thanks for your advice.
Hi, i am trying to fit a sony cd headset into my 1999 Yaris. The images and step by step is very helpful, but i’m hitting a little hitch. I’ve bought a Toyota ISO adaptor from ebay and i’ve tried fitting in the 2 original plugs (the white one and the blue one) in to the adaptor but it doesn’t ‘click’ to go in. I’m not sure whether i need to get another adaptor or what i need to do next!! Help!
Thanks
At 1st thnks for the guide, really helpfull.
Installed a pioneer cd/mp3 and got everything to work, but now I want to replace the front factory speakers with pioneer speakers as well.
Any idea how to replace those?
hey great guide im going to fit a cd player in a y reg yaris tommorow,i was just wondering about the insulating tape?do you just tape some of it round the connections after ur done?
many thanks
Great guide, thx very much! I was happy to find it, ’cause I was just about giving up to have a new head unit. Hifi workshops I asked about it said “it’s difficult, no place for the unit, have to cut, takes much time” (and much of my money I think) etc.
Was a great teamwork: he got the screwdriver I got my notebook and guided him
D
I’m from Hungary and by the way, have an idea. Would you mind if I translate your guide to hungarian and publish it (with source of course)? For yaris owners who do not speak english
Installed a sony head unit with bluetooth phone connection and everything works fine. Really just needed the things you wrote… only one more: my dad
if my english isn’t the best, sorry
Thanks again
cheers
@Avalon – You are more than welcome to translate it and I am really glad it helped.
This looks fantastic – i have a 54 plate Yaris T2 which i’m hopefully going to fit a cd player into soon, are there any big differences with the newer models? My dash panel is slightly different to the one shown in the guide but hopefully the instructions will still work!
Thanks in advance for your help and for the great site!
Please help i have a 05 plate celica i have fitted a kenwood dvd screen into my car but it now keeps draining my battery flat so toyota have disconnected it. My battery no longer goes flat. Now the wires red and yellow are the right way round and it remebers the radio stations so is def wired correctly. I have no amps connected but do have a cd changer connected. Now the question is how can i stop my stereo draning to much battery. I have changed battery and alt is working fine just seems to be that the stereo is draining to much power. Please Help. David
It’s a strange one. If the radio goes off when the ignition is turned off and it remembers the settings, than it seems that the connection is right, so there are 2 things left to check:
1. Battery quality (depends on the age of the battery – if older than 1 year there is a chance it’s not as good as it’s meant to be and it doesn’t charge properly any-longer)
2. The alternator – should charge 14.5V at all times.
I’ll say it’s the first one as getting colder (the weather), the battery cannot hold the power and anything connected could discharge it in few hours.
Hi yeah thats what i thought back in July so brought a new battery but then after a month the new one went flat. the AA said there was a 3.2 or maybe .32 drain which ever is more likely. Then when they disconnected my headunit it dropped down to 1.8 or .18 and now works fine. I had two amps connected but back in july disconnected the fuse sh that can not be doing it. The only thing i can think is my headunit is broken? Or the cd changer connected is draining it. How else could i stop the drain i even put in a Bat cut off switch but even with that disconnected it still drains it through the memory wire for alarm etc that is still connected. I guess i could put a cut of switch on my stereo but then i would loose memory everytime. Any ideas. Many thanks for the quick response and help in advance. David
I don’t know what to say to you, but I doubt is the head unit that is causing the issue.
If it was a non-brand unit I would have agreed with you, but not for Kenwood. These units just don’t give this kind of trouble.
Purchasing the right battery sometimes it could prove to be problematic ( from my own experience).
Those battery might be sitting in the warehouse for years before they get sold which means that the quality is down and problems arises along the way, especially winter time.
In Ireland the weather is not that bad, but one of those battery wouldn’t stand a day in Europe mainland.
The cold weather causes the battery to go flat very quick no matter the consumption levels that seemed alright during the summer.
The Celica’s have a big engine (2.0L) and requires some power to start it in the morning so if I were you, I will be looking in getting a higher Amp’s battery and a better brand (not what the motor-factors recommends – as they are trying to get rid of old stock).
The CD Changer is controled by the head unit so I doubt that could be the cause of your problems.
The head unit might seem to cause the problem but I like to believe that is something else and the new unit just ads on top of the situation…
Okay i will try and get a better battery and see what that does. It is abit of a pain what about upgrading the alternator will that charge it quicker. I might fit a kill switch to the stereo and a meter to measure the voltage on the battery and if it gets low i can switch it off but that seems to just be away around the problem and not really a fix. The car is 1.8 VVTLI but battery is quite small in size as not much room in engine bay maybe try a bigger battery that maybe wont go flat as much. Anyway thanks alot for you help if you do think of anything else please let me know. Cheers David
I can’t thank you guys enough. Following your brilliant instructions, I have just fitted a new JVC CD player in my wife’s 1999 Toyota Yaris in under 30 minutes. I would never have attempted it without your help. Long live the Internet and people like you who selflessly share information with others. Thank you very, very much. Marc
Hello, just tried to fit the CD player and found that its a tiny bit too big, what CD player have you used or have found that fits?
Cheers Woody
The standard DIN size cd player.
Hi there – thank you very much for this guide. Most helpful!!
I actually used it to take out my Yaris’ factory CD player – a while ago it would play CDs but suddenly the controls wouldn’t work. No volume, skip or anything. I left it alone and after a few weeks it stopped playing the CD all together. Dead. The CD was stuck in, but one weekend my battery died and the CD automatically ejected.
I bought a new car battery as it was quite old, but after reading here I’m wondering if the head unit could have been a drain?
Tonight I started to get a buzz noise from the speakers and when I turned the ignition off, the backlight of the CD panel remained on, despite everything else still not working – first time this has happened.
I disconnected /reconnected the battery and it turned off. Took it out (some of those screws can be quite fiddly but lucky I’m a girl with thin fingers
) because I wondered if a wire was loose. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary though.
I’d really appreciate any help as this is the closest source of information I’ve found that could lead somewhere – even looking through owner’s forums. Plus I’m scared my nice new battery might drain!
Thanks!
Hi I recently got a kenwood 4644UY to fit into my 1999 Yaris. I fitted everything in following the guide but whenever it turns on it just flashes up saying “Protect” Apparently this is supposed to talk about a speaker cable short circuit but my original radio works fine if I plug that back in. Any idea?
Oh I forgot to add. I also took out the speaker pins on the Toyota ISO adaptor one by one trying to see which speaker cable it was. I ended up taking out all of them and protect mode still showed… The only one I didn’t take out was the ground wire because I heard that it is very important.
@YarisSR – it sounds to me like the head unit is on its way out.
@Helloworld – the headunit 4644UY has a protection code feature the reason it shows “protect” on the screen. You need the code to unlock it.
Ok, thank you very much for the quick reply!
Well I checked the code that it came with and it seems that nothing at all works when this Protect is continuously blinking. I checked the manual and it says
“The speaker wire has a short circuit or touches the chassis of the vehicle. Wire or insulate speaker wires properly.”
Now it works fine in the normal radio so surely this must mean something is wrong between the ISO adapter and the head unit I guess? Is it possible that the earth is too weak? I’m not really sure what to try.
If the old radio works than this one should as well, unless is locked down for any other reasons.
Did you try getting support from Kenwood itself?
hi just wondering can u help my sisters yaris speakers have just gone there is power to the radio display what would this be down to and would i be able to fix it myself
All the speakers can not go all of a sudden.
Just because the headunit lights-up it doesn’t mean is working.
There is a chance that the final transistor (for the sound) is burnt out.
okay so i was wondering if you knew how to install a head unit for the 2007 toyota yaris s sedan because it is totally a differnt system. would really want to know how to.here is what it looks like.
just go to the web below http://z.about.com/d/cars/1/0/C/Y/ag_07yaris_s_dash.jpg
thanks
i just really need to open the dashboard up to hook up my amp to the deck
My son has just bought a 2000 plate yaris and wants to put in rear speakers. Does the original cass/radio unit support this or would i have to dissable the facia or fr dr speakers to support this. car is 1.o 3 dr. many thanks
HELLO!! you helped me very much to install my new cd player but now i have an other problem my casete player doesn’t play now because it can’t get power.
How can i solve this problem?
Ok so i am a complete novis when it comes to anything to do with cars and i’m sorry if you have already answered this question, but how do i fit a cd player anf keep all original functions for the radio/tape deck working?
Thanks
Stephanie
Hiya, I managed to fit in the cd player but there is one little problem. I can’t flip open the face so I can put a CD in. I have even tried sanding the bottom part of the frame but even that hasn’t helped. Is there anything I can do about it that won’t be too costly? I was advised to get the whole of the frame that holds the radio player replaced. Is there anything I can do?
Thanks.
Hello, I recently bought a Yaris Verso that is an’03 model. The dash looks identical to the one in your fitting photos. Am I right to assume that everything is the same and that I can use your instructions to fit a CD player? I’m looking at a Sony CD494U with a USB port. Will this work in my car? It seems too obvious a question but I don’t want to spend £100 and end up with a lemon on my hands. Thank you
If the dash looks the same, I don’t see any problems.
Great article. I was having trouble with my standard toyota radio, for ages all it has been picking up was static, but the tape player was fine. I imagined the radio was busted but they new stero i fitted has the same issue. What connections are there that you can check between the actual wire aeriel and the connection to the stereo?
Just the aerial cable. It sounds to me like the aerial doesn’t do its job.
You can get a plain wire (few cm long), peal the plastic protection on one end (about 1cm)and inserted into the aerial holder at the back of the radio in the small hole at the center, than check to see if you are picking up and stations.
Hi This article is great. is there any article on how to change front speaker for yaris 2002?
I just change my cd/radio player and notice the speaker is blown. Halford has quoted 60 euro just to change the speaker.
Thanks
@David John – Did you try removing the door panel?
Shouldn’t be that hard – just pay attention not to break anything…
Hi Thanks for the quick response. It actually the front speaker. The one on the dash board.
Great Managed to fit the cd play in 20 mins great advise thanks alot.

hi
I want to fit a sony 52wx4 3beam laser pickup cdx-ca850 cd sytem in my 2001 yaris. But have read that if i do, it will short circuit everything, the imoboliser will kick in and i wont be able to start it again. Can i guarantee if i follow your instruction above this wont happen or would i be best to ask my mechanic to do it for me when i get it serviced?
Hi
Great guide that:
1- saved me about 70 quid, as previous guide I’ve seen was saying to use different, expensive Toyota fascia [I wouldn't buy it anyway but...]
2- made my missus happy as I’ve finally fitted mp3 player laying around for last 6 months
It took me ~30 min at the night with small torch.
Thank you
PS, learn on my example: align properly screw socket under heater knobs when assembling, as when screw will get into it not straight it can damage socket soft plastic and screw will seat in it loose.
Panels are still being hold by clips [when screws are removed] – I’ve used some force to pull the upper panel out.
just got an 02 plate yaris, jump started the car two days later and now the radio/cassette does not work whatsoever… checked all fuses and there all fine, getting frustrated. What should i try?
Greenwing
Have you sorted your problem yet. If so, how did you do it? Exactly the same thing has happened to me
hi
this manual is excellent. The only tool i own is a screwdriver and so decided to try and fit the stereo myself. It all went well, i lost couple of screws but it all stays in place. However, after switching it on it turns out that CD player works perfectly but i can’t find any radio station (just static). I mihgt have forgotten to plug that aerial.. okay i didn’t forget – i have no idea what it is. Could you please let me know where i find it and how to plug it.
Many thanks.
You probably left the aerial still connected to the original radio.
Hi
I just want to thank you very much for this excellent guide.
Just fitted an Pioneer DEH-P 4100 SD to my new Yaris Terra from 2004 in under half an hour.
I needed to remove the instrumental panel, as there was a screw under this to keep the heating panel in place.
Thanks for advice on this page. I have just successfully removed a pound coin from my CD player – my toddler hid it in there.
Okay, it may be a daft question but can someone PLEASE tell me what the aerial look like and where it is and how it should be connected the the stereo so that my radio works. Please!!!
Look at the image in point 5. The aerial is circled in red and can be seen on the left-hand side.
Thank you. That was very helpful. I got it all sorted now.
So my wife’s factory fit Yaris radio/cassette stopped outputting sound over a year ago and I was convinced it was the head unit rather than cabling or speakers going simultaneously and having read a few other forums it appears these head units are notoriously ropey. So before taking to a garage to fix (probably at great expense) I decided to do a Google search and stumbled upon this page. What can I say…GENIOUS!! Bought a new CD/iPod head unit, used this guide and just under an hour later all sorted again. Should have done it 12 months ago!!
Sorry, also meant to say a BIG “thank you” to FunkyMotors.ie!!
Hey Great Guide!
I have all the parts, and just before i start. Is it so that disconnecting the cables at the back (in fitting the aftermarket cd) will stop the buttons on the tape deck working? meaning that the clock etc will not be able to be changed after the fitting?
Any help much appreciated!
Thanks
Hi SlinetMike,
Yes the buttons on the lower cassette/radio buttons section will stop working but the clock/trip comp. etc can still be altered using the upper control panel by the LCD.
Hope this helps
Hey
Just got round to fitting my ‘Inphase IPS920SD’ in my 2001 yaris and it works! well sort of
The Radio and basic CD functions work a treat, but the SD card and USB playback wont work. Is this likley to be a faulty unit or is there a technical reason why it wont work in the yaris?
Just thought i’d ask before i remove it!
Many Thanks Again
Mike
It sounds like a faulty product.
does this work for 96 plate yaris aswell?
im just back from halfords and they said you cannot fit a cd player in this car? i told him i had a tutorial which shows you how to do it and he culdn’t explain himself. he said the cage is too big? can you get smaller cages?
That’s because they only know the straight forward way of things.
If your dashboard looks exactly the same as the pictures above, it should fit 100%.
did you put a cage in or just the cd player without the cage?
just the cd player without the cage
kl, cheers mate im gonna give it a go all tell yeh how it went
Hi
I have recently bought a Yaris (about 8 years old) and have the same dash/display (excuse my technical language I know nothing about cars :S lol) as the pictures above. I didn’t realise that gap would be able to fit a CD player into it, it looked too small at first. Anyhoo, my radio doesn’t work at the moment, or rather it does but only AM :S does fitting a new CD player fix this?
Thanks
xx
Hi, me again lol
What exactly won’t work if I do this, just the tape player or the display as well (mpg etc)??
Thanks again
xx
Just the tape/redio player.
The display will still work but it will only shows the information that it displays when the radio is OFF.
see when you fitted your cd player was there much space left behind it … as the cd player i want to fit is 190mm long whereas yours is only 155mm long … think it will still fit without sticking out the front?
Hi
i have a 2003 toyota yaris with a factory built tape/stereo-it does have a slot which looks as though a stereo could go in is it possible to get hold of a toyota cd player and install into this slot and still have use of the tape- if not is there any way you can install a cd and still have use the tape player?……also does the factory built display panel still work when you fit a cd player.
many many thanks
tone
what are those screws doing that you have ringed in red below instruction 7 please
They are holding the pocket panel below the radio.
Hi,
I have found a fascia adaptor to replace the old radio. Do you think that there is space for a small amplifier behind the dashbord i the Yaris Verso (or under the new Headunit)?
Its 6 x 2 x 1.125 inches
Best Regards
JH Nielsen
Louie, such a great, concise, straightforward article. Thank you.
Can someone recommend a very very basic CD Player suitable for someone getting on in years.
The needs would basically be, play, track forward, track previous and stop\eject. A minimum of ‘multi-use’ push\pull knobs would be a plus too.
Thanks in advance for any tips.
Hi was looking at installing a couple of 6*9′s in the parcel shelf to broaden the sound out and give rear seat passengers something to listen to. would the current toyota head unit run both the 6*9′s and the current speakers?
I have already got a standard toyota CD player in it therefore dont really want to install a new HU as will cost more money etc.
can the same procedure be used to fit a cd player to a toyota verso y reg
HI,
I am going to install a CD player in Yaris but before that I have a problem in tape player. One of my cassette is struck in tape player. Can you let me know how can I get that cassette out. Whenever I press cassette release button, it actually start playing the cassette itself.
Thanks,
Hi.. I’m thinking about installing a new CD unit to my 54 plate yaris..
There are 3 wires connected to the back of the original unit, but only requires 2 wires on the harness.
So what happens to the third?
Just fitted a CD Player to my Yaris Verso. The instructions were invaluable. Didn’t time it but it was a fairly straightforward job apart from two things. When you remove the ashtray, the right hand screw that has to be removed has a channel beneath it and unfortunately as the screw came out it fell into the channel and disappeared into the back of the centre console, never to be seen again. I’d suggest using a magnetic screwdriver or put a piece of paper with a upward fold over the channel. If the screw now drops out you can easily retrieve it by pulling the paper towards you. The other thing was that I couldn’t get the panel that houses the heating switchgear to come completely out so ended up having to carefully wedge it in a half in half out positon and using a long thin driver managed to remove the neccessary screws. If you have this problem be careful on removing and replacing the screws as they too can fall behind the centre console. Should you lose a screw fear not because the four screws you take out of the black tray will fit the same holes. Thanks again for the help
Hi, this looks like a brilliant guide but Im a bit confused. Im just about to buy a 2004 Yaris VVTi T3 and it has the CD player, not tape player. What I would like to know is:
1) Can I still replace the CD player with my own one I bought from ALDI which has MP3 and SD card on it?
2) Will the MPG and thermometer still work etc on the top of the dash?
3) What will happen to the other buttons on the top section of the radio? The bit with the search buttons etc on?
Thanks
Ross
do you have a guide to fitting door speakers in the yaris?
Excellent article. I fitted a CD player in my Yaris 1.3 1999 model straight away.
Thank you very much.
I was having problems with my yaris verso radio. it would’nt pick up any stations and would not play a tape. the odd time it picked up a station, the volome control would not work. I sprayed the preset buttons and into where the tape goes with elactrical solvent cleaner. waited 10 minutes and it worked perfectly and is still working.
my old yaris radio has 2 white connectors and one blue connector. am i right in thinking i just leave the blue one alone and unplug the 2 white ones? thanks
I have one problem. I get up until the part when you try pull the radio out, mine wont come out I’ve unscrewed all the screws, Is there anyway of doing it or should i pull harder?
Hi. In picture 12
Is the top unit the tape/cassete
and the bottom one the original radio ?
or is it the new radio and then the old radio ?
Hi, successfully fitted a new cd player in my 2002 Yaris as the old one stopped working (though the power light still came on). Within a week, the new cd player stopped working. Again, the unit powered up but there wasn’t any sound coming from the speakers. Could be a wiring problem? Is it easy to resolve?
Thanks so much for the info, my brother and i had it fitted in less than half an hour!
Cheers!
Chris
Can I just say, thank you so much, all the other guides were rubbish, but this was so easy and it was fitted in less than twenty mins!! Thanks!! x
Would it be possible to buy a new fascia for a toyota yaris 2004 model to remove the stock stereo and install a new one? and if so from where?
thanks for the info btw
Finally something on the world wide web worth reading and having a good at yourself!!! Many thanks for such a good guide
Hi There. Is it possible to remove the bottom part of the radio (where the tape deck is and the buttons 1 to 6 and the cigarette lighter) and replace it with the one that has a cd player in and would everything else on the music system work ok.
See the one here shown on ebay

hi
i was wondering if the trip display (fuel consumption display) will still work when installing an aftermarket cd by this method.
thanks in advance
thnx alot to the uploader was alot of help
Yes it will.
Hi just a quick question, I have a 1999 Yaris, radio going great untill 2 days ago!the reception became very fuzzy.
Any ideas on where I might bring it to be fixed? I am lost without it!
Thanks
What a great find this was. Easy to follow and worked a treat. Many thanks for the info.
looks like a brilliant guide, very easy to follow. I was just wondering if anybody knows if the toyota iso adapter is available in stores in ireland. I dont have a credit card to purchase stuff online, thanks in advance!
You should be able to pick one up in most car audio shops, otherwise you might get a V3 credit card from any Post Office and purchase one on-line: http://www.carsnparts.ie/Daihatsu-Toyota-Autoleads-Harness-Adaptor-Lead-To-ISO-PC2-17-4-pid4450007/
Just stuck a Kenwood iPod ready stereo in the gf’s 2001 Yaris today.
Ours had a CD player already, so the instructions are very slightly different, particularly the connections to the tape deck, which all loop through the old CD player.
Also, right pain in ass, my KDC-4547UB didn’t come with any screws, and the 5x8mm ones that came out of the Yaris CD player didn’t fit. I tried a load of different ones, in the end cutting 5mm off the end of some 4.8x13mm screws, which did the trick.
After that, everything went to plan, instructions were invaluable.
